Quality Period Extensions & Renovations Melbourne
Extending and renovating an Edwardian or Victorian era home requires particular expertise.
An old period home can have many hidden ‘quirks’ that if not managed correctly from the beginning can compromise the structural integrity of the extension and renovation.
Many builders avoid period homes but we relish these projects and love restoring Edwardian and Victorian era homes. We are experts at letting their original beauty and features shine whilst bringing them respectfully into the 21st Century – meeting the needs of modern families.
An extension on a period home should seamlessly meld with the original part of the home. In order to achieve this we strengthen and upgrade the existing part of the home sourcing original elements and materials ensuring: the floor feels solid, plasterwork is immaculate, wiring and plumbing are replaced where needed and rooms are re-worked for a more practical and modern way of living.
Once the heritage part of the home has sensitively been renovated and strengthened an extension can be sympathetically added so it feels like it belongs and the whole house feels united – with the untrained eye unable to tell where the old part ends and the new part starts.
A good example of how we approach heritage homes is shown in our project in Balaclava.
The client wanted to add a rear extension and completely renovate the front part of an Edwardian home in Balaclava:
- Rear extension seamlessly tied into original period home – doubling original footprint
- Use of recycled bricks and floorboards to maintain transition from old to new
- Contemporary light-filled kitchen and open plan living area opening out to new decked entertaining area
- Original part of the home completely renovated including bathrooms, plasterwork, floorboards – new skylights and storage added
- Hydronic heating added throughout and solar heated hot water installed
This project was completed in 5 months. This is what the Client had to say:
Our brief to Stuart was to build a new extension onto our existing 1920′s Edwardian house.
His knowledge of Edwardian period architecture was fantastic and he was able to renovate and restore the original house including all original features, and seamlessly integrate a new, modern extension. His attention to detail is exceptional and he had great ideas and suggestions that we implemented on how to improve the final finishes and look of the house. He was mindful of our budget, and was able to help guide us on where to spend money and where to save money in order to get the best result and return for our investment.
We wouldn’t hesitate to work with Stuart again and would highly recommend him to others.
